How to Track Your Music Links

Track Your Music: Free Link Tracking with Bitly

Ever share a music link and wonder how many people clicked it, where they clicked it from, or when? In this post, I’ll show you how to set up a trackable link in a flash!

Before we dive in, let’s talk benefits. The more data you have on your clicks, the better you understand your audience – invaluable for making informed decisions about your music. Like this content? Hit subscribe for more!

Using SoundCloud as an Example

I’ve grabbed a track from SoundCloud – “Last Breath of the Escalator.” I’ve copied the URL (which is currently on my clipboard).

Introducing Bitly: Your Free Link Tracking Tool

We’ll use a website called Bitly (https://bitly.com/) to create our trackable link. It’s free (with a paid upgrade option, but the free version is perfect for now).

Here’s what to do:

  1. Go to Bitly.com and click “Create a Bitlink.”
  2. Paste your copied URL into the designated field.
  3. Bitly will automatically suggest a shortened link, but let’s customize it for clarity. I’ll change it to “tricycle-last-breath” (including your artist name works too!).

Shortened Link Ready! What’s Next?

Copy your customized link and open it in a new tab. This should take you to your track.

Tracking Your Stats

On the left side of the Bitly interface, you’ll see a list of all your shortened links. Click on “tricycle-last-breath” (or your chosen name). You won’t see stats yet (since you just created it), but you’ll see information for previous links (like my YouTube playlist link).

The cool part? Bitly shows you where clicks originated from (Instagram, Facebook, email, etc.) and even the location (countries!).
